AoL.! Will it be any different?

I've always had a dislike of AOL and considered it to be worse than a cancer. Once you have it, it is almost impossible to cure or get rid of it without some extreme operating system surgery. And, even then...

I've also mentioned the Drayton Bird blog before and find it both amusing and instructive and this one is no different.

It's about AOL becoming AoL. (the full stop is part of new brand image)!

'Social' Media - what is it really?

It's a question that gets asked time and time again and is often not answered satisfactorily.

The problem is compounded if you try to define the terms themselves. When you try to do that you often find that they don't sit comfortably together and don't actually explain exactly what it is. Adding Marketing onto the end simply makes it worse!

Your help is needed!

If you are one of the members of this site that have an online shop you may have thought about or considered it and even if you haven't or don't trade online most of us will have bought something or other at some time.

Your opinion is wanted and valuable

Apart from the unstated objective of getting visitors to buy your product or service there are factors that influence the process and contribute to the successful completion or otherwise of the task. Some of these are (not an exhaustiContinue

How precise, targeted copywriting wins out!

I've mentioned the following writer a number of times as his thoughts, primarily based on testing and experience, is instructive, often humourous and as a direct marketer, always practical.

There is a ongoing discussion whether short copy is best or longer copy sells more. The length might depend on the medium, as with Adwords which has a maximum of 95 characters to attract attention, pitch the sale and elicit a response, or newspaper lineage ads which charge by the word or col/centimetre.

Can Twitter inprove your SEO and conversion rate?

As already mentioned in a number of posts, relating to using Twitter, the jury may still be out for many potential twitterers on its use or benefit for business development and promotion.

Apart from the obvious benefits there could be, and being experienced by a number of companies both large and small, in terms of brand and customer relationship building, I've noticed another which could prove beneficial from an SEO (search engine optimisation) perspective.

Hi Rob,
My name is Iain and I work for Mr Tax Software - I deal with a software package called Mr Tax CD which is for self employed workers. It is a really easy to use soloution that could save you alot of money from both your tax bill and accountancy fee's. Below is a link to a testimonial from a driving instructor from Manchester:

I had a good idea that was why this function was not available, I suppose they would require to add field category to the profile.

I did manage to find our very own p&d on the site using the keywords and passed on the business.

I have one question you could answer if you don't mind, I have a couple of customers who wanted me to do a website but they don't seem to be interested in providing any information regarding their service even after I stress how important it is to generate traffic, is this a common problem that you guys come across? I am just not too keen to be charging the full price for the site without all the information I need to complete it, and of course associate my business with site's that do not look the finished article.

Have a nice Xmas and a busy New Year!

Hi Rob,

I noticed one thing with the site today Rob while trying to search for a business, there are no categories for members to search through.

I have a lead for a painter and decorator but it would take me a while to find someone without looking through all the profiles, might be something to look into.

Hi Rob

Good to talk to you yesterday at the Falkirk Business Fair.

As I said, you and others involved should be congratulated on this site - it really seems to have taken off quickly and to have developed its own life and momentum as a valuable forum for businesses in the area. So thanks from all of the rest of us who had nothing to do with it!

I was just wondering if the site has been submitted to the usual search engines, and if the members' pages, links, posts etc will be accessible to them? I am quickly learning how important external links are for my company's web site rankings - especially Google - so any extra boost in this area is always useful. I note that West Lothian Council offers all businesses in their patch a free web advert through their Business Portal at westlothian.com : is there anything similar for our local authority area, other than this site?

I saw you demonstrating the Photofiltre free image editing software yesterday, as a useful tool for basic web design. Another one I've used a lot, in case it's helpful to other small businesses, is called Paint.net . It's available free at www.getpaint.net . Very easy to use once you get the hang of it (good help files on its web site), has some of the features of expensive packages but costs nothing.

Keep up the great work!

Hi Rob

Thanks for your comments. I have been putting off the inevitable and the design of my website has taken a back seat yet again (fear of the unknown, and the complicated). I use computers all the time and fairly complex graphics packages so I am sure that it is something that I will master eventually. Once I pluck up the courage to get into it again there is every possibility that you will get a call for help. Thanks again for the offer.

Regards

Karen

Hi Rob,

Jim Stewart from James Stewart Photography here.

I see from your photos that you were at the recent opening of the Bo'ness Hippodrome. I was there covering it for Falkirk Council.

It's a very impressive building and it's good to see that it's going to be used for it's original purpose and not turned into luxury flats as seems to be the norm these days.

One quick question. How do you go about arranging photography for the web sites that you design, is it all done in house or do you use the services of photographers? (OK that's 3 questions in 1).

If you out source your photography then please keep me in mind. I can provide a service either on location or in my studio in the centre of Falkirk. The studio also contains a 5ft x 5ft x 5ft light tent for product shots.

Please feel free to check out my web site at www.jspa.co.uk

Hope to speak to you soon.

Hi Rob,

I've just joined this business network and wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I'm currently working full-time as a graphic / web designer but am keen on developing my own freelance business. My background comes from design for print, I have had a brief look on your website and plan to read it in more depth as web optimisation and accessibility is something that I am interested in learning further.

Thanks for your time!

Regards,
Ross
